Biblical marriage

- math genius Professor Charlie Eppes, from Numb3rs

I'm still watching episodes of the science/FBI tv series from the Scott brothers, Numb3rs, and last night there was an episode about a polygamous religious cult, with the main bad guys based on Warren Jeffs. That reminded me that I had seen an article in The Guardian in which an historian had pointed out that the most "traditional" form of marriage in the past had been not one man and one woman, but one man and many women. So when I saw a post - Speaking of Biblical Marriage ... - at Susan Russell's blog, I thought I'd post it here too, as it dovetailed with the above. Marriage has become much more female-friendly in the present, thankfully .....

If we're really after BIBLICAL Marriage, here are some propositions we should be seeing in upcoming elections:

A. Marriage in the United States shall consist of a union between one man and one or more women.
(Gen 29:17-28; II Sam 3:2-5)

B. Marriage shall not impede a man's right to take concubines in addition to his wife or wives.
(II Sam 5:13; I Kings 11:3; II Chron 11:21)

C. A marriage shall be considered valid only if the wife is a virgin. If the wife is not a virgin, she shall be executed.
(Deut 22:13-21)

D. Marriage of a believer and a non-believer shall be forbidden.
(Gen 24:3; Num 25:1-9; Ezra 9:12; Neh 10:30)

E. Since marriage is for life, neither this Constitution nor the constitution of any State, nor any state or federal law, shall be construed to permit divorce. (Deut 22:19; Mark 10:9)

F. If a married man dies without children, his brother shall marry the widow. If he refuses to marry his brother's widow or deliberately does not give her children, he shall pay a fine of one shoe and be otherwise punished in a manner to be determined by law. (Gen 38:6-10; Deut 25:5-10)

G. In lieu of marriage, if there are no acceptable men in your town, it is required that you get your dad drunk and have sex with him (even if he had previously offered you up as a sex toy to men young and old), tag-teaming with any sisters you may have. Of course, this rule applies only if you are female.
(Gen 19:31-36)

Interesting... An evolutionary psychologist I was reading not too long ago wrote that she considered polygyny more "natural" to the human species than monogamous marriage. According to her, men are made by nature to be less inclined towards monogomy than women are, in order to spread genes far and wide without having to invest too many resources on rearing offspring, whereas women are more cautious about multiple partners because of the amount of time and resources they have to spend on rearing offspring.

According to her, though, she thinks this was actually harder on single men than on married women. Jealousies aside, women in societies that practice polygyny tend to have access to men with resources and status, and have mutual help and support from other wives. According to her, lower status males suffer the most under this situation, because they have limited access to mates. The men with the most status and wealth have the most desirable wives, actually leaving some men with no prospects whatsoever.

She even goes on to hypothesize that the whole phenomena of Islamic suicide bombings might have something to do with polygny, pointing out the whole "72 virgins in heaven" thing, and making note of the fact that most suicide bombers are young single males.

I don't know if I agree with all that; I certainly don't advocate it, and what it all has to do with Christianity, I couldn't tell you, but I found it interesting reading nonetheless.

That's great, Crystal.

As far the evolutionary psychologist stuff goes -- the whole suicide bomber thing sounds like typical Western misinterpretation of Islam, once again.

As far as polygamy's effect on lower status males goes, that sounds very typical from what I've heard about polygamous groups in Utah.

Actually, the author is Japanese. I wonder how she would have explained Kamikaze pilots.

He, not she... I beg your pardon.

Hi Jeff,

The evolutionary stuff sound sthe same for some kinds of animals. Lions have one male and many females in a pride, and the young males are discouraged. When one male takes over a pride by defeating the other male, he usually kills the young offspring, to ensure (it's thought) the survival of his own DNA in new cubs.

But I think for people, biology is not so much destiny and benefits other than DNA multiplication are valued, like true love :) I seriously doubt any good relationship can come of a marriage of more than two people. I think polygamy is just a result of a person in power (a man) being avericious.

That's the way it seemed in the Numb3rs episode too - young males usually were forced from the group and the older guys monopolized the available women. Makes me think of that book/movie, Riders of the Purple Sage :)

Yeah, I wish we could claim that the initial development of monogamy had something to do with fairness towards women and the priority on love in the equation. Unlike the lions, human beings could talk to each other, conspire, and make plans.

I had a feeling it went something like this... "Look, we have to put some rules around this thing. Everybody gets just one wife, see? Otherwise we're going to kill you rich and powerful bastids in your sleep."

I don't know if I could ever agree with any and/or all of this stuff.

Between you and me I don’t read The Good Books cause again between me, myself and sinner vic, we have all the spiritual sex we could possibly ever need and bating the master is no longer our number one repertoire.

Don’t ask me to explain how I know but I believe in the power of a one cell animal which I’ve learned the name of from one of my science teacher. It was then in the early sixties considered to be the lowest life form possible and I recall him saying that if back then someone called us an “Amebas” it was really not a complement although nowadays many would probably disagree with him. He certainly was and maybe if he’s alive, still probably not The Brunt of all science teachers. If a one human animal cell is that powerful, let’s for a spit second try and imagine the power of a spirit and a soul cell. I believe that “IT” would literally blow our human mind if we could accept "IT" but what do I really know?

I’ve mentally ventured into the spiritual Ameba through prayer and without trying to scare anyone, I believe that we in someway breath them in all the time and there’s no hiding from them and without the help of God and His Angels, we would all be doomed. There are even people out there who won’t
shake hands with you cause it scares them mentally so much of catching these so called germs.

Well because of that and other reasons, I’ve had to dismantle my altar cause it was telling me in prayer way more than I really wanted to know and what good would “IT” do to tell anyone the real power of our Heavenly Bodies especially when most still won’t believe the basic laws of God.

Before I took my altar down I prayed in front of “IT” for about a good three hours non stop. My wife and one of our daughter thought that I was being a little eccentric in taking it completely down but how silly can they be, me eccentric?

Anyway later that night I told our three grandchildren that I removed my alter because I was literally starting to fly and I wanted to stay here on earth a little longer with you children and from the look in their eyes their soul and/or spirit were believing me.

Certainly if any of you believe me then I’ve got some swamp land for you at a good price.

Crystal, to make a long story short I also won't advocate A, B, C, D, E, F, G. no matter how true and even if any or all of it has to do with Christianity in some way until I finish this spiritual kindergarten course and make it to grade one with God’s Angels. I’ve been mislead way too often and I can’t trust those fools who keep telling me that they are really my gods.

I could go on and on but then I hear ya! What are you talking about anyway Victor? :)

God Bless,
