Cold
It was pretty cold here last night - California cold snap threatens citrus crop, strands motorists. The water in the bird bath froze, as did this dish of water I leave out for the squirrels - I was able to lift the ice out whole :) ....

Still, not as cold as Jerusalem. Check out Dina's blog - Jerusalem of White

I've lived in the foothills for over 20 years and my waterlines have never frozen until this year. I keep expecting to find the horses with their little tongues stuck to the ice in their trough.
What happens when the water pipes freeze? I always worry they'll break and water go everywhere. I put foam stuff over some of the water pipes outside but I can't get to them all so I worry I'll come home one day and there will just be a lake where the house was ;)
You put foam stuff on them cuz you're smart. Yesterday a pvc valve broke and I had a little geyser in my front yard. An easy fix :) In Wyoming we had to wrap our exposed pipe with heating tape and it still froze sometimes :(
Not smart - my sister always has to remind me and the stuff on the pipes now is just still there from last year ;)
The geyser - that's my fear. At least I know where the water gets turned off.
Wow, that intact ice is a lovely proof of your freezing temperatures.
I kept my in-house faucets dripping for a few nights in the cold last week so the solar hot water glass plates on the roof would not break.
Last snow (2008) many roofs in the village had waterfalls gushing from the hot water tanks.
Hi Dina,
There are tanks of water on the roof? That seems like it would be very heavy. Sounds energy efficient, though.
That's exactly what I wound up doing last night Dina. Just let it drip til morning, low tech but no geyser :)
