Delayed gratification

Thinking about the pandemic and about July 4th.

Today is the 3rg but you would not know that if you lived in my neighborhood, because right now all the neighbors are setting off fireworks, legal and illegal. The outdoor cats are terrified, trying to find someplace safe to hide with explosions going off in every direction. Actually, for the last couple of weeks there have been sporadic fireworks explosions - last night until 2 am (Why Are Fireworks Going Off Every Night in California?)

And this reminds me of the coronavirus resurgence. We were doing pretty good with it at first, with social distancing and mask wearing, but people just couldn't wait to get back to normal, so they ignored the advice of experts and dove into large gatherings, eating at restaurants, having their fake nails re-reapplied.

This is us, and this is why I think we will perish from the earth long before Elon Musk or those who come after him can figure out how to send us all to another planet. As a species we just don't have what it takes to do the hard work, to do the right thing, to put anything or anyone before our own immediate gratification.

Dear Crystal
Even as I journey toward wrapping things up, I still (or again) feel like a Stranger in a Strange Land. America has been a really interesting experiment. I hope we're not done. D J Trump is American Carnage!

Hi Steve. You're always more optimistic than me :) Maybe it's ok that we humans are flawed. To quote Vision from The Age of Ultron, when Ultron says that human kind is doomed, Vision replies ... "Yes... but a thing isn't beautiful because it lasts."
