I haven't yet given up hope ...

Saw this story tonight - Award heats up Gore-for-president buzz ...

The movement to draft Al Gore for the Democratic presidential nomination went into overdrive Friday, with the news that he was co-winner of the Nobel Peace Prize.

"This award will only add to the tremendous tidal wave of support for Al Gore," declared the website draftgore.com, an Internet-based collection of Democrats who are trying to persuade the former vice-president to enter the race for the party's presidential nomination. "He has no choice but to take the one step left to have the greatest impact in changing policy on global warming — run for President."

The story goes on, though, to predict that Gore will not choose to run for president .... I hope they're wrong.

Crystal,Few people can remember times I have wept. But I did today over a blog! Jeff's response to you about Pius x11 and the Nazi regime literally broke my heart. There is plenty of material about PiusX11 and the Nazi regime. The article by his brother-in-law and his article, you notice, talks about a period before we began to know the truth about the holacost.

There are crimes of commission and ommission. Certainly Pius would not want 6 million jews killed. But he said nothing about it publically. To my knowledge he never excommunicated a Nazi leader.I really can't go on on this. It's broken my heart. Jeff is so good, so kind but his reponse to you---please read about this. Jeff and I had a dispute so he does not want me to use his blog. You must be very young. For a person to sit by and watch the killing of millions and never to denounce it is dispecable- The Vica of Christ did just that!!!Please study this issue. Jack

Crystal,

My you've been busy this week! Hard to keep up with all these posts.

I think Gore is better off not running. He's getting much more positive press and probably accomplishing more than he would as president.

I thought of you when I read the news about the Nobel.

Alas, I can't share your enthusiasm for the man. But I'm happy you're happy.

Hi Jack,

I haven't yet read the article that Jeff told me about. I had read the Wikipedia article first, and it had information that was diverse and conflicting, which is why I asked Jeff's opinion. I've yet to come to any conclusion on the subject but as Jeff knows, I like to think different :-)

Will,

yeah, I think it's a forlorn hope that he will run, but if he doesn't, I'm stuck with Hillary :-(

Crystal. I said in a previous comment that I almost never cry. In fact the only time I can remember being brought to tears in recent times both involved Jeff. Several months ago he allowed me to 'confess' to him some episodes in my life that no one, not even my wife kneew. When he did I cried with joy. No nothing criminal, or really that interesting, but I needed someone to know. Now Jeff knows and I can never thank him enough.

The other day when he quoted his brother-in- law on PiusII and the Hollacost I reacted as I described. This battle over Pius' sainthood can be reduced to a battle between the opponents and supporters of VaticanII. The supporters of Pius want to return to a church before Vatican2; a church of private saintliness and opposition to the more 'modern' church with its ecumemical outreach, social justice, etc.

Pius XII has become the rallying cry for those who would return the church to pre-vatican2 times.

No one is saying Pius was a Hitler, although he was anti-semetic at least in his earlier years. Nor is any one saying he did not make some efforts to help jews from the German terror. But this is not enough for sainthood.

"If Pius II nevver approached the level of moral depravity, it is still fair to saythat he was a cautious, passive diplomat, conditioned by his training in canon law and his career in foreign service to proceed with prudence and discretion. In other words, he was a bureaucrat at a time when the world, and especially the Jews in Europe, needed a prophet, or at least a priest more alert to demonic evil. That doesn't make him Hitler's pope. Nor a righteous gentile, either."

It is interesting to note that those supporting Pius are concentrating on the word "heroic" because it seems obvious to me they realize that the judgement of history is clearly that, while a very devout Catholic, in no sense could Pius be called "heroic". Jack

Hi Jack,

I still haven't read the article that Jeff recommended. I'm a fan of Vatican II myself. When I get more time, I'll read up on Pius, but what little I saw in Wikipedia didn't endear him to me. Sorry I didn't get back to comment right away - I'm having trouble with my e-mailer.
