Two weeks

Two weeks now since Kermit died. I'm waiting with a kind of dread for the vet clinic to call and tell me her ashes are ready to be picked up. I thought I'd be missing her less by now but instead I miss her more. Most of my recent photos of her got lost when my computer died and took iphoto with it, but here's an old one of Kermit ....

Hi Crystal,

It takes a long time for the hole left by a long term companion to fill in. And maybe it never does completely, there is always memories that open it up a bit even years down the road.

A lot of people have suggested that you look for another feline companion to keep you company, and as you most likely remember :) I agree with them. There is something about a kitten's antics that does a lot to chase sorrow and pain away, and the foolishness that they display does go a long way toward filling voids.

If you need it, my offer still stands, it is the least that I can do for a friend that gives so much to me.

Love and hugs,

Mike L

Hi Mike,

Thanks for talking to me about Kermit. So far, I don't want to get another pet. Don't know if that will change in the future, but I appreciate your offer :)

You'll know when it's time to meet a new animal friend. My budgie died about a year ago and I still can't believe she's gone! When she died I realized it was the first time in 16 years that I was without a bird in my life. Thank you for sharing yourself with us - it's wonderful to see the love you have for Kermit!

Hugs ~ D

Dyan,

I've never had a bird pet but I have a blue jay family that has lived in my yard for years and they're fun to watch. Once a friend let her parakeet sit on my finger - it felt so neat to feel tiny bird feet holding on to me :)

Birds are definitely unique! My mom bought me my first budgie when I was in high school. He was such a character! He used to land on my bed while I did homework and nibble on the pages to get my attention :) Animals are truly a blessing from God!

I understand Crystal, every time I have had an animal friend die, I have sworn that I wold not have another. But then I wonder through a pet adoption spot and my heart gets captured again!

Amber adopted us, she crawled out from under an RV in Texas and wrapped herself around my ankle, quite literally! We really didn't want two cats while living in the RV, but what could we do?

Then I was at PetSmart and saw Oliver. Don't know what attracted me to him, he was actually comatose from medication they had given him, but since Amber had moved her affection to Susannah I was allowed to get him since the adoption people said he purred. He does and he keeps us entertained with his antics.

We got Chaco about a year ago. Susannah went into a store to buy something and they had a dog adoption operation going on outside. She made the mistake of telling me to go look at the dogs while she shopped. When she emerged I was sitting with Chaco's head in my lap and my arm around him, and I could hear Susannah's "OH! Sh*t!" Chaco is still trying to make friends with the cats despite the scars on his nose. At lest they can now all three sit in the kitchen and beg food while ignoring each other.

Dyan, one of my great memories comes from a few years ago when I was at a fair and got chosen from the audience to have a hawk fly to me, land on my arm, and take food from my hand. Quite an experience seeing such a bird come flying toward me, what a beautiful creature. But that is one pet that Susannah says will not come into our house.

One story is kind of funny. We were in a pet shop in Florida and I walked up to an open cage with a parrot. He immediately hopped out, jumped on my arm and made friends. The pet shop owner rushed up, quite worried, saying the bird was a bit vicious and would bite. Meanwhile the bird was happily grooming my beard and moved to head. The owner explained that the parrot had belonged to an alcoholic sailor who had died not long before. Susannah and I both burst out laughing, we were sailing at the time, and I am a recovering alcoholic! There is an old saying-- birds of a feather flock together ...

With that I will finally say good night.

Love and Hugs,

Mike L
