Hi Crystal, my daughter lived near there last year. It wasn't complete and I didn't know what it was. I found myself hoping it was a Cathedral. It's kind of imposing, it could be ugly, but it reflects the waters of Lake Meritt in an interesting way. Maybe I'll take a peek inside someday.
that is a beautiful Cathedral. is that the one they make out of blocks of ice and have to rebuild each winter? By the way, I think Jerry Brown should be Bishop, He's Catholic, been to seminary, never married, has administrative experience. What do you think?
No, I think you're mixing it up with the Fortress of Solitude :)
Jerry Brown is actually married now. I didn't know that myself until I wrote a post about him a while ago. Still, I think he'd be a better bishop than so many we already have.
I wouldn't say it's ugly, especially on the inside, but I don't find it a place where I would want to pray. I like modern and post-modern architecture in secular buildings, but very rarely in Catholic churches.
Yes, he was on the road to Jesuitness :) I think the outside is nicer looking than the inside, which seems cold to me. Another modern place, is the chapel of St. Ignatius at the Jesuit university of Seattle.
Not my style. The inside is too cold, as you said. Reminds me too much of a gymnasium. But at least they used some wood. Hopefully we;re beyond the horrid modern church (and other) architecture of the 1960s forward that tried to be cool and futuristic and now looks dorky and inhuman.
It looks like a bingo hall! The people who constructed this edifice show evidence of knowing a lot about very many subjects (architecture, lighting, etc.), but it seems a piy that the one topic on which they seem to have known nothing is the Catholic religion!
When it was being built, I thought it might be beautiful, soaring glass curves and all that. But from the sidewalk it is forbidding, walling itself off with the Brutalist concrete bunkers.
The overall impression is of an air defense radar and misile battery, you have the antennas under the dome, and the fire control and command bunkers nearby.

I like it. Jack
OK you guys :) It's not that I don't like modern - did you see the post about Hallgrímskirkja?

Wow. Guess he'll have to settle for Governor. Thanks for the update, I need to get out more :p
Jerry was going to be a Jesuit, wasn't he?
