Mary M
Today's the Memorial of St. Mary Magdalene. James Martin SJ has a post about her at America magazine's blog - The Woman from Magdala - and Andy Alexander SJ has an interesting contemplation about her at Creighton U's daily reflection page. Both of them mention that Mary was not the fallen woman portrayed by the Church for so many years. When looking for some pics of her, I was struck by how very different the representations of her were ......
- Penitent St Mary Magdalene by Titian
- Mary Magdalen by Dante Gabriel Rossetti
- Mary Magdalen in the Grotto by Jules-Joseph Lefebvre
- Mary Magdalen Exalted by Angels by Charles Marochetti

Interesting, did you see Dali's @ http://collectionnewyork.com/dali_mary.html
Yikes! Dali's painting of her is truly disturbing - a sort of fuzzy veus de Willendorf torso :)
Perhaps not as chubby, but.. Dali is nothing if not disturbing or disturbed. This curious tid-bit from Wikipedia:
"An Italian friar, Gabriele Maria Berardi, claimed to have performed an exorcism on Dalí while he was in France in 1947.In 2005, a sculpture of Christ on the Cross was discovered in the friar's estate. It had been claimed that Dalí gave this work to his exorcist out of gratitude, and two Spanish art experts confirmed that there were adequate stylistic reasons to believe the sculpture was made by Dalí."
Interesting. I saw that there's a movie out about him now (and Lorca) - Little Ashes. Don't know if it's any good.
Sounds like a Spanish Brokeback Mt(with art and poetry):)
