Paul on what happens when we die

The most recent NT Pod offering from Professor Mark Goodacre is Resurrection and After-life in Paul. The post has a nine minute mp3 file by Mark with notes for those who want further info ... well worth a listen.

Thanks Mark for this lucid summary. I appreciate your warning in the end not to cast Paul’s thoughts into an ironclad system. It reminds me of another key passage: 2 Cor 5,3 re. Paul’s hope in the face of death. Oscar Cullmann in his Immortality of the Soul or Resurrection of the Body did assume an “interim state” of the “naked” soul waiting in the proximity of Christ for the resurrection of the body. He could do this by changing the expression to “be clothed with” (Gr endusamenoi) into its opposite (Gr. ekdusamenoi) = to become bereft of the body at death. Paul was supposed to fear this state of nakedness, according to OC. An unwarranted systematizing of Paul’s thought, it seems to me. However, Paul rather expressed in ecstatic terms his hope based on the fact that he already was “clothed with Christ” at his baptism (vs 3). He hoped therefore not to appear naked before the judgment seat of Christ after death (2 Cor 5,10). See also JBL LXXXVIII (1969) 445-457.
