Third lecture on Justice
- Alas, poor Yorick!
Thanks to Open Culture, I see that Harvard professor Michael Sandel’s third lecture in his popular course on Justice is out. He begins with a mention of what he'd last been discussing in the prior lecture - John Stuart Mill's idea that people that are exposed to stuff of varying value will usually choose the thing of the highest value (I seem to remember Aristotle saying the same thing?). To illustrate this, the professor showed the class three different video clips: one from Mel Gibson's Hamlet, one from a reality tv show, and one from The Simpsons. Though most people in the class seemed to prefer watching The Simpsons, by the time the discussion had ended, they'd reached the agreement that Hamlet was what they would rather have with them on a desert island :) This third lecture touches on individual rights and libertarianism and wealthiest man in the world, Bill Gates, gets figured into it :) - you can read a synopsis of the lecture at Open Culture, but here's the video of the class .....
