Waltzing Matilda
One reason I haven't posted much about movies lately is that I've been using my netflix disks to watch episodes of JAG. Tonight was one I especially liked - in it the character of Australian Lieutenant Commander Michael "Mic" Brumby leaves the show,. In the story, he's sent to East Timor and his fellow workers sing him off - it's made kind of sad because in real life, the actor died not long after.

I don't know much about the movie but when I looked at the clip, I found that song to be an appropriated Christmas song.
Go Figure! Maybe "IT" was the Christmas tree in the background and/or just my senti mental old heart? :)

A song that always moves me, Crystal. For some reason (maybe due to Australian movies I've seen), I always associate it with the tragic loss of life of so many young men in World War I--especially, among the British, men from the colonies.
And speaking of England and war, I've now read "Blackout" and have just started "All Clear." I am so glad to have learned about Connie Willis from you.
What happened to the actor, Crystal? He looks young and healthy.

I like the song a lot too - it seems in some way sad and brave. Thinking about the song and wars reminds me of that anti-war "And the Band Played Waltzing Matilda".
Strange you should say that about Blackout - I just ordered it from the library. I've been trying to get it for some time but they only have a few audio copies and those from linked libraries - the one I've got coming is being sent from San Diego! :) You might also like another sci-fi book I've been reading, though it's very different from Connie Willis' books - it's The Speed of Dark by Elizabeth Moon.

It's sad - he was just 40. He apparently committed suicide when his marriage broke up :(
How awful. Probably a lot of back story there.
