Straw
I read online somewhere that straw made warm bedding for stray cats when it's cold, so I sent away for some. I don't know exactly how to use it, but Thor seems to like it - he's taken possession of the box it has come in :) ...

Ha, somehow the picture reminds me of a manger scene.
Having stacked and moved tons of strawbales in my years at Heifer Ranch, it is funny to me that one can buy a little box of straw.
You're right, it is warm insulation in winter. Hope your cats enjoy it.
I used to put down fresh straw in the animal pens in the showbarn like, as a Christmas present. But the donkeys, goats and sheep were so pleased to see something new that they would eat it (instead of the good nutritious hay).

Not having your experience, I've ever been around straw or hay before and I was surprised to read that there was a difference between them. There is a place in town that sells bales but they were out the day I got a ride so it was Amazon.com to the rescue ;)
Straw in the mail seemed funny to me too but it seems Amazon has provided a purrfect accommodation for Thor, he looks pretty cozy.
It is funny. And kind of expensive - about $20 for that one small box ;)
I think you're supposed to put it in an enclosed space (maybe find a used small doghouse on Craigslist) so the cat can burrow in a bit and be insulated from the cold.
I wish you had a farm supply store. We have several here. Straw is cheap.

There is one store like that here but me not driving and my sister being so busy, it's hard to get there. I have tried putting some of the straw in a cat igloo thing I got them ... http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-PfDuzHg5SHE/VGUS8vNWSzI/AAAAAAAAPUw/a8DF1QcfzvA/s1600/catcondo.jpg ... and they seemed to like it but then it rained and the straw got all wet. Need a new plan :)
Nice igloo! Maybe angle it in such a way that the rain won't get in. This might be different for every rain storm. But it never rains in California, right? :-)
Yeah, usually this is drought-world but for the last week and a half it's really been raining a lot and even flooding in places, so the cats are NOT pleased ;)
