Good Friday
Or Bad Friday, which is how I feel about it. Here is a scene from The Last Temptation of Christ, in which David Bowie is playing Pontius Pilate ...
It's weird how hard Christianuty has tried to portray Pilate as *not* a bad guy .... Benedict 16 almost seemed to llike him ... yet according to history, he was indeed a brutal ruler.

Yeah, I don't think Pilate was a good guy. There are some Eastern Christian traditions which believe that he later converted, but there's no historical evidence for that. He was said to have been removed from office by his superiors because of his excessively brutal way of governing. "Excessively brutal" for Romans has to be pretty bad.
Another thought occurred to me, most bullies are cowards inside. Pilate was afraid. I'm not sure exactly what he was afraid of, I suppose of losing power or threats to his authority.
Yes, I've read some opinions that the church at the time the gospels were written wanted to make it clear that it was the fault of the Jews that Jesus had been killed, and at the same time wanted to not piss off Rome. So a combination of antisemitism and political expediency. Even Hitler had a good word for Pilate ... https://libquotes.com/adolf-hitler/quote/lbn8o2x
