Us and the Roman Empire
It used to be theorized that the problem of lead pipes/lead in drinking water ultimately caused the fall of the Roman Empire. It was more complex than that, of course, but that's what comes to mind when I think of modern society and microplastics. It's especially disturbing to me, as I have been drinking all my water from plastic bottles for years now. Gulp :(

I guess I'm not that worried about plastics. Some of the troublesome ones are regulated anyway. I drink water out of plastic bottles too. I usually refill them at home with filtered water when they are empty. You'd think if we were drinking plastic from them that over time they'd dissolve or leak. But they don't.
Yeah, the pipes where I live are really old and corroded so I drink water from plastic bottles. By now I must be half plastic ;)
