Something rare

I think it's very hard for anyone to ever change their mind about things they find important. It is for me, certainly, because I usually have such an investment in what I believe that it's painful to even see another viewpoint, much less adopt it. But I saw a video tonight of the Republican mayor of San Diego, a regional bastion of conservatism, explaining that that's exactly what's happened to him on the issue of marriage equality (hat tip to Andrew Sullivan). It really touched me, so I thought I'd post it ......

Wow. We so rarely see a politician struggle in public with moral choices like that. It was very moving, just as you said.

Why don't we see more Republicans like this? Trying to do the right and moral thing, led by their heart, and - I'm sure - mind, willing to wrestle with various dimensions of the issue? Instead, we get so many who seem incapable of acknowledging any complexity in life, who believe God has expressed clearly the rules of the game for everyone in the same way.

Even if someone believes this man made the wrong choice in the eyes of God, I can't help but think that like any loving father, God would embrace him tremendously for trying his best to love.

To be fair, Democrats, too, can be rigid and intolerant in their thinking, but these extremist religious Republicans who rule out of fear and hatred seem to have taken over the party.

Hi William,

Yeah, politicians seem to do the safe thing, usually.

San Diego is one of the most conservative parts of California, so it's especially unusual, I think, for a republican mayor there to change his mind about something like this. I've read there are big rallies taking place on both sides of the issue there now.

Yeah, I read about the different rallies.

I didn't know San Diego was so conservative. Why is that?

Maybe because it has a lot of wealthy people and also a big navy base?

Wow is right! I agree - God does embrace him for trying to do his best to love! After all, isn't that what Christ left us with: Love God and love everyone else ;)
