Ceasefire

So what's up with a possible ceadefire? There's a detailed article at The Times of Israel ... Hamas claims to accept ceasefire, hostage deal; Israel: This isn’t what we agreed to

It doesn't look like the original deal that was offered by Israel has been accepted by Hamas. Instead Hamas has changed the terms, including a bit that says the ceasefire will be a permanent end to the war. That is a non-starter for Israel, and the war cabinet decided unanimously against accepting that idea.

Meanwhile, Israel has asked Gazans in the eastern part of Rafah to evacuate to a designated humanitarian zone in Al-Mawasi, about 5 miles away near the coast, where field hospitals and aid tents have been set up.

Things keep changing, but it doesn't seem likely that a ceasefure will be arranged as long as Hamas demands a total end to the war, allowing the terror group to stay in power in Gaza

So Hamas and friends agreed to a ceasefire on the part of Israel, which didn't agree to it. I'm not seeing that it makes much sense.

It appears they added some other provisions and then agreed to it. They must have realized Israel would not accept it, but maybe they hoped it would cause confusion and maybe delay or doom the Rafah invasion. The NY Post has an article about the changes ... https://nypost.com/2024/05/06/world-news/hamas-changed-ceasefire-deal-to-count-dead-hostages-report/

The idea that you would count dead hostages in an exchange seems crazy. Of course the bodies should be returned and given proper burial. But priority should be given to living people who are still suffering.

Yes, and Hamas not only is holding hostage the bodies of people that died in captivity, it also killed people in Israel on Oct 7 and then took their dead bodies back with them to Gaza. I still recall the video of them driving a pickup truck through the streets of Gaza with a dead Israeli woman, have clothed, in the back, and all the people in the streets howling. They were like trophies.
