The latest tv series I've been watching is Hell on Wheels ...
an American Western television series about the construction of the first transcontinental railroad across the United States .... The series, which features Anson Mount, Colm Meaney, Common, and Dominique McElligott, chronicles the Union Pacific Railroad and its laborers, mercenaries, prostitutes, surveyors, and othhers who lived, worked, and died in the mobile encampment, called "Hell on Wheels", that followed the railhead west across the Great Plains.
In particular, the story focuses on Cullen Bohannon (Mount), a former Confederate soldier who initially joins the railroad to track down Union soldiers who murdered his wife and young son during the American Civil War. In the process he becomes a foreman and eventually chief engineer on the railroad ...
Usually I only watch science fiction or fantasy tv stuff, but I thought I'd give this a try because the main character is played by Anson Mount, who also portrays Captain Christopher Pike on the series Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. Another prominent character in Hell on Wheels is portrayed by Colm Meaney, who played Chief O'Brien on Star Trek: The Next Generation. And I like history too, so it's all good.
The show was on AMC from 2011 to 2016. Here's a trailer for the first season ...
