Bolton's book

The New York Times has a preview of the book former National Security Advisor John Bolton has written but not yet published. The House Democrats have been trying to get Bolton's testimony in the impeachment trial - his aides who did testify said that he described Trump's Ukraine scheme as a "drug deal" of which he wanted no part. Republicans in the Senate refuse to call Bolton as a witness, and Trump has made it clear he would try to block any testimony by Bolton.

Trump Tied Ukraine Aid to Inquiries He Sought, Bolton Book Says

[...] The book presents an outline of what Mr. Bolton might testify to if he is called as a witness in the Senate impeachment trial, the people said. The White House could use the pre-publication review process, which has no set time frame, to delay or even kill the book’s publication or omit key passages.

Over dozens of pages, Mr. Bolton described how the Ukraine affair unfolded over several months until he departed the White House in September. He described not only the president’s private disparagement of Ukraine but also new details about senior cabinet officials who have publicly tried to sidestep involvement [Pompeo, Barr, Mulvaney, etc.] .....

I can't figure out if the Republicans in the Senate are spineless cowards who are terrified of Trump, cynical liars who only care about themselves staying in power, or pod-people whose innards have been scooped out and replaced with sentient Trump poop. Maybe it's all of the above.

So Bolton wrote a tell-all book, detailing the things they don't want him to testify about. Sure, they could try to block the publication, but it's already been said. I don't get it. It seems like an end run around the refusal to let him testify. But it also seems like an attempt to personally profit from the situation. Could also be a bit of self defense, an attempt to not end up "committing suicide". If the secrets are already spilled, then they are less likely to take desperate measures to keep him silent.

It seems it bothered him that people might think he didn't testify because he instead wanted to save it all for the book and make a profit from the situation, so that's why he volunteered to testify, and then when that didn't seem to be happening, sent out advance book details to a bunch of people. It's been pointed out that anytime he wanted he could sit for an exhaustive tv interview and spill all the beans, but maybe he doesn't want to piss off the Right by seeming too eager to cross Trump? I've heard he has quite a temper - maybe Trump finally screwed the wrong guy.
