He was a staunch defender of human rights, and animal rights too (We Must Fight Injustice To Animals).
And he had a long and close friendship with the Dalai Lama :) ...
Sad that he is gone.

I am sad that he is gone, too. Didn't he win the Nobel peace prize one year? I think he was a force for good, in his country and in the world.
Yes, he won it in 1984, i think. He was really one of a kind.
