God, guns 'n babies

I saw that above description of Sarah Palin's political stance and just liked the way it sounded :) but now on to my post, which does in a way have to do with Palin (the 'babies' part). I saw at the Episcopal Cafe that a new study has come out, conducted by Joseph Wright, a political science professor at Penn State University and a visiting fellow at the University of Notre Dame, and Michael Bailey, a professor of American government at Georgetown University, showing that the government social programs and economic conditions of the Bill Clinton years were responsible for the drop in the abortion rate that occurred in the 1990's. Here's a bit from the Episcopal Cafe ......

States that spend more generously on nutritional supplement programs, for example, could see up to 37 percent lower abortion rates. Other factors such as cutting welfare more slowly and higher male employment rates had a 20 to 29 percent reduction rate. The negative approaches don't seem to work. Welfare caps on children born while on welfare and laws requiring parental consent for minors have only negligible impact. The study concludes that "pro-family policies reduce abortions."

You can read more about the study at Catholics in Alliance for the Common Good.

I had seen Thomas Reese SJ say something about this back when the wafer wars started but it's interesting to see an actual study done on it.
