70 years

It seems bizarre that we in the US, who are trying so hard to keep Trump from making himself king here, would be gusshing over the wonderfulness of Queen Elizabeth reigning for 70 years. Yes, the British monarcchy is kind of quaint in a Disneylandish sort of way, but come on, we fought a war to get out from under these autocrats - we shouldn't romaniticize monarchy.

I mentioned to my daughter an interesting science fiction premise: what if QE2 never died, just kept going? Her son, grandson, great grandson all grew old and died, but she was immortal. I got a look. Must be binge-watching 4 seasons of The Crown my first week of the virus. I liked that show, btw.

Hi Todd :) I had a British acquaintance who said that Americans were much more fascinated by the royal family than the Brits are. Maybe now that we're safe from them we can enjoy them more. I used to be so interested in medieval British royal history - Harold, the Plantagenets, etc.

I liked the movie, The King's Speech. Elizabeth and her sister were just little girls in that. I have a lot of respect for her father, George V (I think he was the fifth, not entirely sure). He didn't have an easy time of it.
One thing I like about Elizabeth is her way of speaking in public, for instance, the talk she gave at the beginning of the Covid pandemic. She struck the right note of comfort, while encouraging people to act for the common good.

She does seem to be a good leader. I don't know much about the contemporary royal family except the stuff that has made it into the news, like the Princess Diana and Prince Harry stuff, and the Prince Andrew/Epstein scandal. In school I was more interested in the oldies, like Richard the Lionheart :)
