The plunder ing of Greenland

Trump's going on about taking over Greenland again - did same in his first term. Why? I think I know ...

Why Donald Trump wants to buy Greenland: the hunt for elements to undermine China (2019)

They are 17 in number and between them are becoming the driving force for the 21st century. Their names are unfamiliar but they power most of our household technology.

Nicknamed the “vitamins of modern life”, these rare earth elements possess unique magnetic and lighting properties that are central to the production of civilian and military technology.

Now, as the trade war with China heats up, the US faces being cut off from the supply of natural resources crucial to the trappings of modern life: rechargeable batteries, smartphones, missile guidance systems, electric cars and more.

Hence President Trump’s interest in Greenland, which is estimated to hold a quarter of the world’s known reserves of the elements, with names such as scandium, yttrium and neodymium. As things stand, China enjoys an almost total global monopoly ...

And then there's the fact that Grreenland is quite large, and given the climate change ice melt, more and more of it is becoming useable.

Hope Trump doesn't get Greenland. This beautiful place has been plundered enough over the centuries, and it's only getting worse ...

Thanks for the video link, Crystal. I'm going to watch it after lunch. For what it's worth, I think Trump is talking smack about acquiring Greenland, whether he realizes it or not. The US would have to buy it from Denmark, and they're not selling.
Maybe if Trump's worried about losing China as a source for the rare earth metals, he should be nice to Denmark and the Greenlanders, who are self governing to an extent. He's supposed to be good at making deals (evidence is lacking there) but he's never been good at being nice.
If anyone deserves to profit from the minerals, it's the people who live there. And Denmark and Greenland are much more likely to harvest their natural resources responsibly than the US is.

I think Trump believes he can scare Denmark into selling by acting as if he would actually take Greenland over militarily. I read once that Trump is into that "create your own reality" and the "power of positive thinking" stuff.

I think he would get a lot of pushback even from his own party about threatening to act militarily against a country which has done nothing to the US.
"Create your own reality" makes me think of those "create your own adventure" books my kids used to get from Scholastic Press book fairs.
